If you are looking for frugal ways to get fit without busting your budget, here are a few easy ideas. When embarking on my quest to live a happier, healthier life, I knew that exercise was a big part of that equation. The problem was, I was never into exercise much, in fact, I just downright hated it. I always had every excuse in the book not to exercise, but my primary reason was that it was too expensive. There is no doubt that exercise equipment, gym memberships, classes and clothing can add up quickly. However, there are still many ways you can get in shape without going broke. First, I think it is important to find an exercise you love and look forward to doing. For me, exercise that turned out to be walking outdoors. I am a loner by nature, so walking was perfect. I relish the quiet time and it gives me a chance to be alone with my thoughts without a million other kinds of stimuli seeping into my brain. We live in a world nowadays so tethered by technology, so for me one of the highlights of my day is to get a chance walk away from all that for a bit. 😉

But, hey, that’s just me. If you’re not sure what exercise you’d like to tackle, then here are several ways you can work out without going broke. I mean, after all, the point is to live a happier healthier life, right? You might as well pocket some savings while you’re at it and spend the extra money on something you’ll enjoy!
Walking
Walking is a great way to get started on the road to fitness without spending a lot out of pocket. Most of us have a pair of decent walking shoes to begin with and there’s no special equipment really needed. Looking for a good place to walk? You can find local walking information from Map My Walk with information on nearest walking courses and events. Just type in your zipcode to find the nearest locations.
Exercise Dvds at the Library
Dvds are FREE to check out at the library and most of them are free to rent for a week. It gives you a chance to try a variety of different workouts without putting out any money. Most libraries offer a pretty good selection too. I searched our library catalog online with the term “workout” in the Dvd section for example and I got back 47 results.
Use an Exercise Resistance Band
Exercise Resistance Bands are generally very cheap and they are more versatile than one would expect. You can generally find them priced for around $5 or less.
Jump Rope
And a few other frugal forms of exercise include jumping rope, using a stability ball and free-weights, all of which are fairly low-cost options
Park at the End of the Parking Lot
When you’re out and about shopping or running errands, don’t head for the nearest spot. This may not seem like much, but believe me, all of those extra steps do add up.
Take the Stairs instead of the Elevator
Always look for opportunities to get extra exercising in. One way is to opt for the stairs instead of heading for the elevator.
You Tube
You Tube offers an endless variety of free workout videos on seemingly endless forms of exercise including Yoga, Power Walking, Cardio, Dancing, Strength Training and oh, so much more! The reader ratings and comments are helpful too in deciding which videos work best for you. One of my favorites is Leslie Sansone and her various walking videos. I like that she offers videos of different lengths, so if you don’t have a lot of time, you can opt for a 1-Mile Walk workout or if you have more time you can check out her 3-Mile workout. I enjoy her upbeat walking workouts when I don’t have the inclination to go outdoors on a particular day.
So, as you can see from my examples, there are plenty of options to get your workout on without having to spend a ton. Â And please, feel free to share your favorite frugal fit tips!
